The 3rd day of the world championships in Verbier began under brilliant sunshine. Rémi Bonnet of Switzerland took the junior title. The cadets, Julien Ançay, Florian Ulrich and Florence Buchs, all won medals.
Golden Bonnet
The magic of the world championships continued in Verbier. After the fantastic Spanish double on Saturday in the elite group, the juniors and the cadets shone between Médran or Clambin and Les Ruinettes. Rémi Bonnet from Gruyère, Fribourg, took the title of the men’s juniors, coming in almost 30 minutes ahead of the others. “I’ve kept some energy ready for Tuesday’s individual race”, he commented. The Italian, Davide Magnini, finished second and the Frenchman, Swann Juillaguet, took bronze. Behind him, Frenchman, Simon Bellabouvier and Arnaud Gasser from the Valais placed well and finished 5th. Also for the Swiss, Micha Steiner came 9th and Pierre Mettan from Evionnaz, 15th, gave a great performance. The Belgian, Maximillien Drion, from Vercorin, 17th, confirmed his current form.
Italian flair
In the girls’ junior category, Italians Giulia Compagnoni and Alba De Silvestro claimed the double. Austria took its first medal thanks to Verena Streitberger, a great 3rd. The Swiss settled for 7th place with Marianne Fatton from Neuchâtel and 11th place with Sabine Caloz from Bramois, who continues to progress.
Shining cadets
In the men’s cadet category, the Swiss shone again with Julien Ançay from Fully who took 2nd place and Florian Ulrich from La Tour-de-Peilz in Vaud who took 3rd place. Victory went to the Italian Andréa Prandi. Johan Fatton from Neuchâtel came 10th. In the ladies cadet category, Justine Tonso and Fanny Meynet-Cordonnier from France took a fantastic double. Switzerland’s Florence Buchs took the bronze medal. “I am over the moon”, she said as she came in. “I gave everything. I’m so happy”.
The competitions continue on Monday with the individual senior race and the ‘espoirs’ category over in Bruson. The weather forecast is for yet more sunshine. Entertainment guaranteed!
